Argumentation and Poetry in Ancient Arabic Rhetoric: An Authentic Study and Applied Models

Abstract

The topic of argumentation in Arabic rhetoric has received considerable attention from Arab scholars, who have sought to emphasize that Arabic rhetoric is a persuasive and entertaining form of rhetoric in all its aspects and concepts. In all its aspects and methods, it is based on the persuasive and argumentative function, as well as on an aesthetic function. This has been evident from its earliest beginnings and throughout its various sciences and arts.

Arabic poetry, particularly ancient poetry, is a fertile field for argumentation, which ancient Arab poets employed in their poetry to persuade and influence their audiences through numerous mechanisms and techniques, including, for example, alliteration, metaphor, emphasis, etc. This signifies the presence of the argumentative dimension in both ancient Arabic rhetoric and poetry.
